Squat Advice from World Champion
Are you here to watch celebrities lift or learn weightlifting?
During my training with Chinese weightlifting provincial team (Guangxi) under guidance of Coach Tao Chuang, I noticed that almost all lifters had very decent form... something that most of you want would probably describe as elite level technique.
It’s great to observe good technicians in three dimensions (and not just YouTube,) so your eye can develop, and you could spot imperfections when you’re coaching. Problem is, that by observing elite you never learn how they got to that level.
So I asked Tao Chuang to introduce me to 2 lower level gyms who serve as feeders for the provincial team. One developmental program is coached by 2 time World Champion in 62kg category, Qiu Le.
How legit is Coach Qiu Le?
8 Major Points For better squat technique
- Knees stay out and in line with toes, no deviation (exception for heavy attempts, if you actually make them.)
- Let me repeat the point above, this is serious, no knees going in, you will have to stay with 60kg or so, and don't progress until you do it correctly, Coach Qiu Le doesn't take hostages. Some Chinese coaches allow some inconsistency here, but not him.
- Knees stay forward at bottom of squat, lifting with quads, again, nobody gets away with murder, Coach constantly walks around and there is plenty of mirrors, he sees everything.
- Chin slightly up and doesn't change position during the lift.
- Absolutely no change is back angle during squat.
- Bounce from bottom of squat like basketball, movement is in legs only, entire torso stiff (traps, abdomen, obliques, lower back, etc.) Watch first clip in the video again if you have to.
- Arms and wrists relaxed during squats – this might be a controversial concept, many advise to push up on the barbell. I tried relaxed method, it works well.
- Use of knee wraps and belts – this is unimportant fluff, not even worth discussing. If you're still thinking about it, you're wasting time.
